coffee conversations

Coffee with Ameena #12

If we were having coffee, I’d start the date by announcing with a little jiggly dance of course, how I have spent 11 days of fasting and working, without my morning coffee. I am proud of myself and I am giving myself a pat on the back.

If we were having coffee, I’d have a wide grin and look at you with side eyes, while reminding you of all those times you said I was “addicted to coffee”. Well, here is your proof. Case closed.

If we were having coffee, I’d remind you (as if you need anymore reminders), that its getting to the middle of the year. Are you still with the people you began the year with? Are you happy with the decision of letting go of some people or is the bruise still hurting from the people who have stepped out of your life? Have you made new connections in the past 5 months? Are you in line with the goals you set for yourself, for your life or have they simply gone by just like the past 5 months?

If we were having coffee, I’d ask you to take a moment and reflect on this question- are you happy? Are you doing the things which are making you happy? Is there more reason for unhappiness in your life than joy? How can we work towards finding that silver lining when everyday you wake up, hope springs or at least curiosity springs out from your soul?

If we were having coffee, I’d remind you that a healthy body requires a healthy mind; we cant nourish one without nourishing the other and expect the flower within our souls to flourish. It takes both sunshine and rain to grow… your physical health is the sunshine, now lets get that rain for your mental health.

If we were having coffee, I would apologise for asking so many questions but my curiosity is getting the better of me, and it’s been too long a week for me to ask “how are you, how was your week?” When I know the answer I would get from you would probably be “I am fine, the week was great”, even though we both know that you are not fine and the week has not been great; but you say so because that is the expected answer after all right.

If we were having coffee, I’d remind you that’s why we have these weekly coffee dates, to laugh, rant and cry over how adulthood is such a scam, and definitely not what we envisioned as kids.

If we were having coffee, I’d remind you that in between your hectic schedule, in between working at a job you absolutely detest, in between working at a job which is breaking your spirit, find something you love and do it on the side. It could be writing, blogging, journalling, painting, volunteering, crafting… a few minutes spent doing a soul fulfilling act is enough to keep you pushing through the remainder of the 24 hrs. Trust me, I know. Writing is more than a past time, it is a break from life and it’s harsh realities, and at the same time, it is life itself.

And thats it for this week’s coffee date, I need to get some shut eye, which never seems enough these days… I hope the remainder of your week is filled with love, laughter and coffee.
